Communicable diseases remain a leading cause of death in low and medium-income countries of the world, including African countries. Communicable diseases drive the use of antibiotics and in turn antimicrobial resistance. A holistic approach to antimicrobial use (AMU) and prescribing is needed to combat the problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
This course will look at the threat of antimicrobial resistance in Nigeria sharing experiences with recent developments around the World. It will consider AMU, how best to improve it, and AMR; how best to tackle it. This is in line with the aim of some of the AMR projects in the country which is to optimize antibiotic use in patient care through improved diagnostic and antimicrobial prescription practice and enhance quality education through operational research intervention training and stewardship strategies.
